In short

The NLHPC in Chile is aimed to install in Chile a computational capacity that can satisfy the national scientific demand for high performance computing (HPC), offering high quality services and promoting its use on  basic as well as applied research problems, with emphasis on industrial applications. In recent years, the development of applied sciences and industry has been directed by the sophisticated use of the information and communication technologies (ICT), process in which HPC has played a fundamental role.


In Chile, some areas of science, as well as some industrial sectors, have reached such a level of maturity that in order to keep a level of world class competitivity the use of technologies related to HPC is required.

Identifying the opportunities that the availability of HPC technologies will bring to the country,  the majority of Research Universities in Chile, led by the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of Universidad de Chile (UChile), proposed to CONICYT the creation of the National Laboratory for High Performance Computing (NLHPC).


The NLHPC is formed by Universidad de Chile (Sponsoring Institution), universities Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh), Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN), Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM), Universidad de Antofagasta (UA), Universidad del Bío Bío (UBB), Universidad de Concepción (UDEC), Universidad de la Frontera (UFRO), Universidad de La Serena (ULS), Universidad de Magallanes (UMAG), Universidad de Santiago (USACH), Universidad de Talca (UTalca), Universidad de Tarapacá (UTA), and Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), in association with Aura observatory in Chile, Centro de Estudios  Avanzados en Zonas Áridas (CEAZA), Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencia de Valparaíso (CINV), Fundación Ciencia & Vida (FCV), INRIA Chile and REUNA as its associate institutions (AI).


The NLHPC consolidates a distributed HPC infrastructure connected via a high speed network provided by REUNA- to a central processing node which is located at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM), at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) – Universidad de Chile, center of excellence in scientific research, with vast experience in high scale collaborative projects management.


NLHPC Mission

To consolidate a national facility for HPC by offering high quality services and advanced training to answer a growing national demand for scientific computing, developing links between research groups, the industry and public sectors.


NLHPC Vision

We envision the NLHPC as a world class highly competitive center with a variety of services for the investigation in high performance computing.

General aim

The NLHPC will serve as a key IT partner to large scale research projects based on HPC.


Specific aims

  • To develop and support powerful and reliable computing and network resources enabling national researchers to have access to an HPC capacity to solve computing- and data-intensive scientific problems.
  • To stimulate and participate in the creation of a national high speed network for the transmission of investigation data.
  • To use and explore architectures and innovative techniques for the acceleration of  scientific computing.
  • To trigger new industrial initiatives on HPC.
  • To help educate the next generations of scientists and engineers on HPC.
  • To increase social awareness on the role of HPC in the contemporary society and technological development.
